FACIAL VEINS AND ROSACEA

Facial veins are enlarged veins of the face, nose, and cheeks and chin. They can be a source of considerable self consciousness and embarassment.

WHAT ARE FACIAL SPIDER VEINS AND ROSACEA?

Facial spider veins are dilated veins that appear on the face and neck. Rosacea is a a sydrome of facial redness characterized by flushing, facial vein dilatation, and small bumps.

WHAT CAUSES FACIAL SPIDER VEINS AND ROSACEA?

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown. Various theories include bacterial overgrowth or colonization, sun damage, neurovascular disease, chemical exposures, and abnormal oil glands. Facial spider veins occur in cases of excessive sun exposure, pregnancy, oral contraceptive use, and liver problems. Excessive alcohol use has also been blamed as a cause for facial veins and rosacea.

HOW IS THE DIAGNOSIS OF ROSACEA AND FACIAL SPIDER VEINS MADE?

The diagnosis is made by physical examination.

HOW ARE ROSACEA AND SPIDER VEINS TREATED?

There are different types of rosacea, and the treatment plan is tailored to the patient and type of lesion found. In general, if there is a component of Rosacea treatment that has acne-like lesions, then oral antibiotics and topical medications might be indicated. In the variety of rosacea where there are mostly enlarged veins, then treatment with a laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) can help some patients. Spider veins on the other hand are best treated with a laser, although IPL has also been used for this condition.

HOW CAN ROSACEA AND SPIDER VEINS BE PREVENTED?

Suncreen and sun avoidence are very important for the prevention of spider veins as well as rosacea. Sun screens and hats that limit exposure to the sun are recommended. In addition, rosacea can be triggered by exposure to wind, and cold or hot temperatures. Activities such as eating spicy foods, hot drinks, exercise or drinking alcohol can also exacerbate the condition. Therefore, one needs to try and avoid any of these factors that seems to aggrevate the condition.
